Cerne Abbas is a parish and small town, situated in a pleasant valley, watered by the river Cerne, about 8 miles north from Dorchester and 5 north-east from Maiden Newton station, on the Great Western railway, in the Western division of the county, head of the petty sessional division hundred and union of Cerne, Dorchester county court district, rural deanery of Whitchurch Cerne portion, archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury.
