Whimple, Devon

Historical Description

Whimple, a village and a parish in Devonshire. The village, which has a station on the L. & S.W.R., 163 miles from London and 4 miles WNW of Ottery St Mary, has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Exeter, and a fair on the Monday before Michaelmas. The parish includes Strete Raleigh tithing, and comprises 3038 acres; population, 686. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter; gross value, £350 with residence. The church is ancient but good, and has been enlarged. There is a Congregational chapel.
