Westward Ho, Devon

Historical Description

Westward Ho, a small but charming watering-place in Northam parish, Devonshire, 2¼ miles from Bideford station on the L. & S.W.R., and 250 from London. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Bideford, and is situated on the west of an extensive common of 1000 acres, known as the Northam Burrows. The place has been called Westward Ho from the Rev. Charles Kingsley's novel of that name, the scene of which is chiefly laid in this vicinity. The church was erected in 1870 as a chapel of ease to Northam, and is an edifice of stone in the Early English style. There is a large and well-appointed hotel, besides many excellent lodging houses and good golf links. There is a coastguard station.
