Thorverton, Devon

Historical Description

Thorverton, a parish, with a village, in Devonshire, with a station on the G.W.R., 187 miles from London, and 7 N of Exeter. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office, and fairs on the last Monday of Feb., and the Monday after 18 July. Acreage, 4104; population, 863. The Exe Valley railway, opened in 1885, is the property of the G.W.R. Company, and connects the main line at Stoke Canon with the Devon and Somerset branch near Dulverton. The manor belongs to the Dean and Chapter of Exeter. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Exeter; net value, £280 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Exeter. The church is an ancient building in the Gothic style. There is a Baptist chapel and Conservative club.
