Newton Poppleford, Devon
Historical Description
Newton Poppleford, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in Devonshire. The village stands on the river Otter, 3 miles NW by W of Sidmouth station on the L. & S.W.R. It took the latter part of its name from oval pebbles found in the soil and from a ford in the river, and has a post office under Exeter; money order office, Tipton St John; telegraph office, Sidmouth; a bridge over the Otter, and fairs on Holy Thursday and the Wednesday after 18 Oct. The bridge was erected in 1840 at a cost of about £2500. Population of the ecclesiastical parish, 485. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Exeter; gross value, £150 with residence. The church was founded originally as a chantry chapel about 1330 by Edward III., was enlarged in 1826, and has an ancient tower. There is a chapel for the Brethren.
