Whitwell, Derbyshire

Historical Description

Whitwell, a village and a parish in Derbyshire. The village stands 4½ miles WSW of Worksop, and 151 from London, and has a station on the M.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Chesterfield. The parish includes Belph and Baxton Moor hamlets, and part of Creswell, and comprises 5231 acres; population, 1908. The manor belongs to the Duke of Portland. Whitwell Hall was the seat of Sir Roger Manners, who died in 1632, and is now used as the national school. The living is a rectory, with Steetley annexed, in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £428 with residence. Patron, the Duke of Portland. The church is large, cruciform, and chiefly Norman, and was thoroughly restored in 1886, at a cost of £2000. There are piscinae, sedilia, and an ancient font. A small, ancient, Norman, ivy-clad church at Steetley was restored and reconciled in 1880. There are Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels.
