Totley, Derbyshire

Historical Description

Totley, a township in Dronfield parish, Derbyshire, 3½ miles WNW of Dronfield, with a station called Dore and Totley on the M.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Sheffield. Acreage, 1852; population, 1438. Near here is the Totley Tunnel on the Dore and Chinley railway, completed in 1893. It is more than 3½ miles long, and is only exceeded in length by the Severn Tunnel. The Victoria Gardens, 10 acres in extent, are in the neighbourhood. A Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1895.
