Oakthorpe and Donisthorpe, Derbyshire

Historical Description

Oakthorpe and Donisthorpe, two hamlets forming a joint township in Stretton-en-le-Field, Church Gresley, and Measham parishes, Derbyshire, on the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Canal, adjacent to Leicestershire, and 3 miles SW of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. There is a station at Donisthorpe on the Ashby and Nuneaton Joint railway, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Ashby-de-la-Zouch. There is also a post office at Oakthorpe. Acreage, 1805; population, 1678. The manor of Oakthorpe belongs to Lord Donington. The township is included in the ecclesiastical parish of Donisthorpe. There are a church, two Primitive Methodist chapels, and a cemetery (opened in 1875) in Donisthorpe; and Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels in Oakthorpe. See DONISTHORPE.
