Norbury, Derbyshire

Historical Description

Norbury, a village and a parish in Derbyshire. The village stands on the river Dove, and on the Ashborne branch of the North Staffordshire railway, at the boundary with Staffordshire, 5 miles SW of Ashborne, and has a station on the railway. The parish contains also the hamlet of Boston, which has a post office under Ashborne; money order and telegraph office, Ellastoue. Acreage, 2298; population, 414. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Southwell; net value. £300 with residence. The church was restored in 1841; comprises Decorated English chancel and Tudor nave, aisle, and tower. The chancel has eight very fine three-light windows besides the E end window, all filled with old painted glass and of very beautiful tracery. The church contains two elaborate alabaster altar-tombs of the 15th century to the Fitzherbert family. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, an endowed school, and several small charities. The greater part of the parish is grass land, and dairy farming is extensively carried on. There is a cheese factory in the neighbourhood.
