Biggin, Derbyshire

Historical Description

Biggin, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Derbyshire. The township is in Hartington Nether Quarter parish, and lies near the Cromford and High Park railway, 7½ miles SW of Bakewell. Post town, Ashbourne, which is the money order and telegraph office. Acreage, 643; population of township, 112; of the ecclesiastical parish, 325. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; gross value, £164 with residence. Patron, the Duke of Devonshire. The church is modern. There are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels.

St. Thomas (parish church)

The church of St. Thomas is a modern edifice in an Early Gothic style, built by subscription in 1848, on a site given by the Duke of Devonshire, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, south porch and an embattled tower at the west end containing one bell and a clock with two dials, presented in 1899 by Mrs. Wraith, of Darwen, to the memory of her father, the late William Dain esq. of Biggin, and his eldest brother Henry: various gifts have also been made by Mr. John West and his family, and by others.
