St John in the Vale, Cumberland

Historical Description

John-in-the-Vale, St, an ecclesiastical parish in St John Castlerigg and Wythburn township, Crosthwaite parish, Cumberland, 2½ miles SE of Keswick railway station. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Keswick. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Carlisle; gross value, £136 with residence. Patron, alternately the Earl of Lonsdale and landowners. The church stands on Naddle Fell, 700 feet above sea-level, was rebuilt in 1845 and the interior was restored in 1893. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1863. Population, 774, including over 300 navvies who were engaged at the time of the census on the Thirlmere Waterworks for supplying Manchester.
