Newfield, Cumberland

Historical Description

Newfield, a village at the mutual boundary of Cumberland and Lancashire, at the foot of Seathwaite, 6 miles N of Broughton-in-Furness. It contains a small church and parsonage, and it was the residence for about twenty years of the clergyman popularly called " Wonderful Walker," whose story is pathetically told by Wordsworth. The " stepping-stones" across the Duddon have been the subject of two sonnets by Wordsworth.
