Ivegill or Highhead, Cumberland

Historical Description

Ivegill or Highhead, a hamlet and an ecclesiastical parish in Dalston parish, Cumberland, in Inglewood Forest, 6 miles from Dalston station on the Maryport and Carlisle railway, and 8 S by E of Carlisle. The hamlet has a post office under Carlisle; money order office, Southwaite; telegraph office, Dalston. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1867, and comprises the township of Middle Sceugh and Braithwaite, and the village of Itonfield. Population, 548. Highhead Castle, used as a farm-house, belonged to the Har-clas, the Dacres, the L'Englises, and is now in the possession of Lord Brougham and Vaux, who has erected a modern mansion in the Renaissance style. The living of Ivegill, with Highhead, is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; net value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Carlisle. The church was built in 1867, is in the Gothic style, and contains several stained glass windows. There is a chapel of ease at Highhead, and a mission-room at Itonfield.
