Eskdale and Wasdale, Cumberland

Historical Description

Eskdale and Wasdale, a township and a chapelry in St Bees parish, Cumberland, on the river Esk, 6 miles NE by E of Ravenglass, with a station called Eskdale Green on the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway, and a post and money order office (S.O.) under Holmrook; telegraph office, Holmrook. Acreage, 17,419; population of the township, 434; of the chapelry, 449. The surface consists largely of moor and mountain. Micaceous iron ore is found. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; net value, £95 with residence. Patron, Lord Muncaster. The church is very good, and there are small charities.
