Crosscanonby, Cumberland

Historical Description

Crosscanonby, a township and a parish in Cumberland. The township lies on the river Ellen and the Solway Firth, 1½ mile from Dearham Bridge station on the Maryport and Carlisle railway, and 3 miles NE of Maryport. The parish includes also the townships of Crosby and Birkby and the chapelry of Maryport, which is the post town. Acreage, 2889; population of the civil parish, 9196; of the ecclesiastical, 1257. Coal and stone are worked. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; net value, £276 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle. The church is partly Norman, and very good. The living of Maryport is a separate benefice.
