New Ferry, Cheshire

Historical Description

New Ferry, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in the parish of Lower Bebington, Cheshire, on the river Mersey, nearly opposite Liverpool, with a station (Bebington) on the Birkenhead railway, 2 miles S of Birkenhead. There is a post, money order, and telegraph office (T.S.O.) under Birkenhead, and an iron pier from which steamboats ply to a'nd from Liverpool. There are Conservative and Liberal clubs. The training ship Conwas/, for officers of the mercantile marine, training ship Indefatigable for the sons and orphans of sailors, and two reformatory training ships are moored in the Mersey opposite New Ferry. Extensive soapworks are at Port Sunlight. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1888; population, 3874. For parish council purposes it forms one of the wards of the urban district council of Lower Bebington, and returns nine members. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chester; gross value, £84 with residence. Patron, the Rector of Bebington. The church was erected in 1867, and is a handsome edifice in the Early English style. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
