Handley, Cheshire

Historical Description

Handley, a village, a township, and a parish in Cheshire. The township lies near an affluent of the river Dee, 1½ mile WSW of Tattenhall station, 3½ miles S of Waverton station on the Chester and Shrewsbury section of the L. & N.W.R., and 7½ SE by S of Chester. It has a post office under Chester; money order and telegraph office, Tattenhall. Acreage, 1351; population, 281. The parish includes also the town- I ship of Golborne David, and comprises 2011 acres; population, 355. Calveley Hall is now a farmhouse. Building-stone is quarried. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chester; net value, £156. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Chester. The church was rebuilt in 1854, but retains an ancient tower; the chancel and vestry were restored in 1891 There is a Wesleyan chapel.
