Combermere Abbey, Cheshire

Historical Description

Combermere Abbey, the seat of Viscount Combermere, in Acton parish, Cheshire, 3½ miles NE of Whitchurch. The mansion is built on the site of a Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century, and given at the dissolution to George Cotton, whose descendant, Field-Marshal Sir Stapleton Cotton, was raised to the peerage in 1826 as Viscount Combermere for his services in India and the Peninsula. The mansion is situated in an extensive park, surrounded by beautiful woods, and overlooking Combermere Mere, a lake over 138 acres in extent.
