Sutton in the Isle, Cambridgeshire

Historical Description

Sutton or Sutton-in-the Isle, a village and a parish in Cambridgeshire. The village stands on the Ely, Sutton, and St Ives branch of the G.E.R., on which it has a station, 6 miles W by S of Ely. It occupies an eminence with a commanding view, consists chiefly of two long parallel streets joined by several steep lanes, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Ely. The parish comprises 7115 acres of land and 30 of water; population, 1433. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. The manor belongs to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Saxon coins, rings, and silver plates were found in 1654. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ely; gross value, £1214, net £338 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Ely. The church is of the 14th century, and has a pinnacled tower with octagon spire. There are Wesleyan, Baptist, and Free Methodist chapels.
