Radclive, Buckinghamshire

Historical Description

Radclive, a parish in Buckinghamshire, on the river Ouse, 1¼ mile W of Buckingham. It contains the hamlet of Chackmore, and is officially described as Radclive-with-Chackmore. There is a post office at Chackmore under Buckingham; money order and telegraph office, Buckingham. Acreage, 1184; population, 321. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The manor belongs to New College, Oxford. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford; net value, £301. Patron, New College, Oxford. The chnrch is an ancient edifice of stone in the Transitional, Norman, and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, S porch, and an embattled western tower. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Chackmore.

St. John the Evangelist (parish church)

The church of St. John the Evangelist is an ancient building of stone in the Transition Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 3 bells: the windows in the nave are Decorated with the exception of one, which is Perpendicular: in the chancel are two Early English windows and a Decorated east window: the south doorway is Transition Norman: the whole church was, about the year 1903, thoroughly restored under the supervision of Mr. J. Oldrid Scott F.S.A. architect, at a cost of £1,000: there are 100 sittings.
