Wasing, Berkshire

Historical Description

Wasing, a parish in Berks, separated from Brimpton by the river Auburn, which is here crossed by a bridge of three arches, 2 miles S from Midgham station on the G.W.R., and 12 SW from Reading. Post town, Reading; money order and telegraph office, Woolhampton. Acreage, 690; population, 87. The manor with Wasing Place, a modern mansion of brick belongs to the Mount family. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford; value, £97 with residence. The church is a small building of rubble, consisting of chancel, nave, S transept, S porch, and a central turret.

St. Nicholas (parish church)

The church of St. Nicholas is a small edifice of rubble stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south transept, south porch and a central turret containing 2 bells: the chancel, which is Early English, was thoroughly restored about the year 1870: the east window and two others in the chancel are stained: there is a handsome brass lectern: the church affords 112 sittings.
