Shippon, Berkshire

Historical Description

Shippon, a township in Abingdon St. Helen civil parish, Berks, and an ecclesiastical parish in the civil parish of St Helen (formed under the Local Government Act of 1894), 1 mile WNW of Abingdon station on the G.W.R. . Post town and money order and telegraph office, Abingdon. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1865. Population, 173. The manor and the whole of the land belong to the Duchy of Cornwall. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Oxford; net value, £97 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Oxford. The church, erected in 1855 from designs by the late Sir G. Gilbert Scott, R.A., is a building of stone in the Decorated style.

St. Mary Magdalene (parish church)

The church of St. Mary Magdalene is a building of stone in the Decorated style, from designs by the late Sir G. Gilbert Scott R.A.: it was consecrated December, 1855, and consists of chancel, nave, north porch and a western turret with crocheted spire containing one bell: there are 183 sittings. In the churchyard, at the east end, is an altar tomb with open arcading, to the Rev. William Alder Strange D.D. first Boden Sanscrit scholar at Oxford University, head master of Abingdon school, 1840-68, and sometime vicar of Bishop Middleham, Durham, d. 17 April, 1874.
