Little Coxwell, Berkshire

Historical Description

Coxwell, Little, a township-chapelry in Great Faringdon parish, Berks, 1¼ mile S of Faringdon station on the "G.W.R., and 4½ miles NE of Shrivenham. It has a post office under Faringdon; money order and telegraph office, Faringdon. Acreage, 887; population, 251, There are some curious excavations here which are believed to have been habitations of the ancient Britons. The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Faringdon, in the diocese of Oxford. The church is a building of stone, chiefly of the Norman and Transitional periods.

St. Mary (parish church)

The church of St. Mary is a building of stone, principally of the Norman and Transitional periods, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a small central bell gable containing 2 bells; the east window has Decorated tracery, and is flanked on each side by cinquefoil-headed niches; in the south wall of the chancel is a piscina; the nave has a Norman south door and Early English and Perpendicular windows; over the western gallery is a small circular stained window; the pulpit is of oak, richly carved: there are 120 sittings.
