Fernham, Berkshire

Historical Description

Fernham, a township in Shrivenham parish, Berks, near the G.W.R., 2½ miles SSE of Faringdon, and 1½ mile N from Uffington Junction station. Post town and money order office, Faringdon; telegraph office, Uffington Junction railway station. Acreage, 1016; population, 146. A church for Long-eott chapelry was built here m 1861, at a cost of £819, exclusive of the site, consists of nave, chancel, and south porch, with bell turret, and is in the Geometric style. There is also a small Congregational chapeL

Church of England

St. John's Chapel

St. John's, a chapel of ease to Longcot, is a small modern building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and western bell-gable with one bell: the chancel parclose and reading desk are of freestone with coloured marble panels; the font is octagonal with emblematically carved panels, and is supported on marble shafts: the east window is a memorial to John Hughes, who died in 1857:- there is a small stained window on the south side of the chancel and another in the nave; there are 110 sittings.

There is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1830, seating 90 persons.


Civil Registration

Fernham was in Faringdon Registration District from 1837 to 1937 and Wantage Registration District from 1937 to 1974
