St. Nicholas, Baulking, Berkshire
Description
The church of St. Nicholas is a small but ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western turret containing 2 bells; the chancel arch, supported on open buttresses, forms a kind of screen, and there is a canopied piscina and sedilia; the stairs to the rood loft also remain; on the south side is a marble slab inscribed to Ann Frances (Josselyn), wife of the Rev. Francis Rose D.D. vicar here, died 4th May, 1870; on the north side a memorial to Robert Grove, gent. ob. 30th May, 1698, Margaret his wife and four children; there are also monuments, with arms to George Champion, gent. ob. 26 September, 1722; and to Thomas Champion, of London, ob. 23rd March, 1724; there are also inscribed floor stones to the Hyde family, 1743-82; the font is ancient and octagonal: there are 100 sittings.
