Description
The church of the Holy Innocents, built In 1851, is a splendid edifice of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and a tower with lofty spire containing 3 bells, and was erected and endowed at the sole cost of the late Thomas Gambier Parry esq. of Highnam Court, who with his own hand painted the frescoes with which the interior is profusely enriched: over the chancel arch is a representation of "The Last Judgment"; the wall of the north aisle exhibits the triumphant entry of Our Lord into Jerusalem, the principal New Testament characters being represented in the procession; on the first bay of the south wall of the nave is "The Expulsion from Paradise," and on the corresponding bay of the north is "The Annunciation"; there are about 250 sittings.
