St. John the Baptist, Doddington, Kent

Description

The church of St. John the Baptist is of flint, in the Early English and Decorated styles, and has a tower containing 2 bells: the south chapel, probably erected about 1280, is a good example of the Early English period, and has a double lancet east window: here also is a slab with an incised cross and inscription in Lombardic characters; the pulpit is Jacobean; on the north side of the chancel is a recess with aumbry and a stone desk, above which is a niche in which are traces of a carved crucifix and a low side window: in 1873-4 the chancel was re-paved and furnished with new stalls, and in 1907-8 the church was thoroughly restored: the church contains 250 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged in 1907 with land given by Brig.-Gen. P. D. Jeffreys C.B.
