Description
The chapel of St. Michael, restored in 1877, at a cost of £800, is a building of stone, in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower containing 3 bells: the chancel was erected to the memory of the late George Gwyn Elger esq. who died Oct. 31st, 1874, and has double sedilia and a piscina: the south doorway is a fine example of enriched Norman work: there is a Norman font; and in the nave near the entrance is a holy water stoup: the east window is stained, and there are also in the chancel four other stained windows, presented by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hinshaw, in 1887, and tablets to Francis Palmer, gent. d. July 4th, 1715, and Mary his wife, d. March 9th, 1725; to Palmer Hatch, gent. d. Oct. 22nd, 1782, and Mary his wife, d. Aug. 18th, 1790; under the tower is a memorial erected by his fellow officers to Lieut. C. E. Woodward, of H.M. 98th Reg. who died at Fort Attock, in the Punjaub, India, May 12th, 1859, and there are modern monuments to the Woodward family: the church will seat 100 persons.
