QUEEN of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland; Defender of the Faith; Sovereign Protector of the United States of the Ionian Islands. -ALEXANDRINA VICTORIA, only child of the late Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, (4th son of King George III.) by the Princess Victoria Mary Louisa, 4th dau. of Francis, Duke of Saxe Coburg Saalfeld, sister of Leopold, King of the Belgians, and relict of Emich Charles, Prince of Leiningen. Born May 24th, 1819; mar. February 10th, 1840, Prince Albert of Saxe Cobourg and Gotha, (whom see); ascended the throne on the demise of her uncle William IV., on 20th June, 1837; has the patronage of 135 livings; is Sovereign of the orders of the Garter, the Bath, the Thistle, St. Patrick, and St. Michael and St. George. Residences-St. James's Palace and Buckingham Palace, London; Windsor Castle, Berkshire; Hampton Court and Kensington, Middlesex; Kew, Surrey; Brighton, Sussex; Holyrood House, Edinburgh; the Castle, Dublin.

Heir pres., her daughter, the Princess Royal, born November 21st, 1840.


His Royal Highness, FRANCIS ALBERT AUGUSTUS CHARLES EMMANUEL, K.G., G.C.B., P.C., D.C.L., Ph. D., &c.; DUKE OF SAXE, PRINCE OF SAXE COBOURG AND GOTHA; second son of Ernest, (the Duchess of Kent's brother) Duke of Saxe Cobourg Saalfeld, (who took the title of Saxe Cobourg and Gotha in 1826,) by his first wife Dorothea Louisa, Princess of Saxe Gotha; is therefore nephew as well as son-in-law to H.R.H. the Duchess of Kent. Born August 26th, 1819; mar. February 10th, 1840, Queen Victoria (whom see); is a Field Marshal in the army, commission dated Feb. 8th, 1840; was naturalized by act of parliament 3rd Vict. cap. 1 and 2; is Colonel of the 11th (or Prince Albert's Own) Hussars, commission dated April 30th, 1840; enjoys an income of £30,000 per annum, granted by act of Parliament, 3rd Vict. cap. 3; takes precedence next after the Queen, under Royal Warrant.
