Austen of Shalford

AUSTEN, SIR HENRY-EDMUND, Knt. of Shalford House, co. Surrey, J.P. and D.L., high-sheriff in 1810; b. 20 May, 1785; m. 1st, in 1805, Anne-Amelia, only dau. of the late Robert-Spearman Bate, Esq., of the H.E.I.C.S., and by her (who d. 5 Sept. 1839) has surviving issue,

I. ROBERT-ALFRED-CLOYNE, b. 17 March, 1808, a magistrate and deputy-lieut. for Surrey; m. in 1832, Maud-Elizabeth, dau. of Col. Godwin, C.B., gentleman-usher to Prince ALBERT, and has, besides daus., a son, Henry-Haversham.
II. Henry-Edmund, b. 4 March, 1809, capt. in the 71st light-infantry.
III. Frederick-Lewes, b. 16 Oct. 1813.
IV. Algernon-Stuart, lieut. R.N., b. 3 Aug. 1815.
V. John-Wentworth, lieut, 49th regt., b. 5 July, 1820.
VI. Albert-George, lieut, E.I.C.'s service, b. 9 Sept. 1822.
I. Amelia, m. in 1832, to James Brabazon, Esq. of Mornington House, co. Meath.

Sir Henry Austen m. 2ndly, in 1843, Lady Pocklington, widow of Sir Robert Pocklington, K.M.T., of Chelsworth, Suffolk.

Lineage.-The late ROBERT AUSTEN, Esq. of Shalford, who was a munificent benefactor to the parish of Shalford, by rebuilding its church at his own expense, in 1788, m. in 1772, Frances-Annesley, dau. and heir of John-Wentworth-Nazianzen Gregory, Esq., and had surviving issue,

I. HENRY-EDMUND, his heir.
I. Frances-Ann, m. to the Hon. John Bedford, judge of the Vice-Admiralty Court in Barbadoes, and had (with a dau., who d. in 1805) two sons,

1 Edward-Henry Bedford.
2 Paul-Austen Bedford, in holy orders.

II. Elizabeth-Smith.

Mr. Austen d. 3 Nov. 1797, and was s. by his son, the present SIR HENRY-EDMUND AUSTEN, of Shalford.

Arms-Azure, a chevron, arg., between three Cornish choughs, or.
Crest-On a leopard's head, az., a falcon rising, or.
Motto-Ne quid nimis.
