Andrews of Little Lever and Rivington

ANDREWS, JOHN, Esq., of Little Lever and Rivington, co. Lancaster, b. 25 July, 1786.

Lineage.-This is a branch of the ancient family of ANDREW of Charwelton, co. Northampton, founded by RALPH ANDREW, of Gray's Inn, son of Thomas Andrew, of Carlisle, anno 1286, as appears from a certificate under the hand and seal of John Andrew, son of Sir John Andrew, of Charwelton, now among the archives of the College of Arms.

JOHN ANDREW, Esq. of Little Lever Hall, son and heir of Nicholas Andrew, citizen of London (who purchased the Little Lever estate) by Heth, dau. of Thomas Lever, Esq. of Little Lever, a captain in CROMWELL'S army, entered his pedigree at the visitation of Lancashire, 16 May, 1664, held by Sir William Dugdale, Norroy King-at-Arms. He m. for his 2nd Wife, in 1653, Jane, dau. and heiress of Robert Lever, Esq. of Darcy Lever, co. Lancaster, and had issue. The son and heir,

JOHN ANDREW, otherwise ANDREWS, of Little Lever and Rivington, m. 6 July, 1682, Anna, dau. of Robert Mort, Esq. of Wharton Hall, in Little Hulton, co. Lancaster, and had issue (besides the eldest son and heir, John, whose line is extinct)

ROBERT ANDREWS, of Bolton-le-Moors, co. Lancaster, 2nd son, m. 30 Dec. 1712, Hannah, dau. of Joseph Crompton, of the Hackin, co. Lancaster, afterwards of Bolton-le-Moors, in the same county, and had, with other issue,

I. JOSEPH, of whom presently.
II. Robert, b. 29 June, 1723; minister of the presbyterian chapel, Bridgenorth, co. Salop; m. Hannah, dau. of - Hazlewood, of Bridgenorth; d. s. p.
III. James, of Manchester, and afterwards of Bolton-le-Moors, co. Lancaster, b. 4 Feb. 1728; m 31 Oct. 1750, Susanna, 2nd dau. and eventually co-heiress of Robert Dukinfield, Esq. of Manchester, son of Sir Robert Dukinfield, Bart., and had issue two daus. and co-heiresses (he d. in Nov. 1768; she d. in Jan. 1787), viz.,

1 Susanna, b. 26 June, 1755; m. 8 July, 1776, the Rev. Jonathan Hodgkinson, of Hindley, co. Lancaster (he d. 13 July, 1812: she d. 10 May, 1828), and had issue, James-Andrews, b 25 Jan., 1783; William, b. 12 March, 1786, d. unm. 14 Sept. 1855; and Susanna-Andrews, b. 8 April, 1791; m. her cousin, Thomas Hibbert, Esq. of Everton, co. Lancaster, and d. 17 April, 1850.
2 Frances, b. 11 June, 1761; m. at Wigan, co. Lancaster, 23 Feb. 1789, the Rev. Nathaniel Hibbert, of Rivington, co. Lancaster (he d. 30 June 1819, she d. 10 April, 1830), and had, with junior issue, Thomas, of Everton, co. Lancaster, b. 21 Aug. 1791; m. his cousin, Susanna-Andrews Hodgkinson, as before mentioned, and has issue, Thomas-Dorning, b. 29 July, 1821, of the Middle Temple, barrister-at-law, his only surviving child.

JOSEPH ANDREWS, of Bolton-le-Moors, son and heir, b. 25 Nov. 1715; m. Hannah, dau. of Edward Kenyon, of that place, and had issue,

I. Hannah, b. 13 April, 1740: m. in 1766, John Fletcher, of Liverpool, and had, with three daus., four sons,

1 Thomas, of Liverpool, b. 22 June, 1767; m. Anna, dan of William Enfield, LL D., and d. leaving issue.
2 Joseph, of Liverpool, b. 19 Oct. 1768; m. Eliza, dau. of Robert Nicholson, of Liverpool, and d. leaving issue.
3 John, of Liverpool, b. 20 April, 1773; d. 24 Aug. 1844, leaving issue by both wives. He m. 1st, Eliza, dau. of Thomas Hodgson, of Caten, co. Lancaster, and had issue. He m. 2ndly, Sarah, dau. of Eli Jagger, of Liverpool, and had issue.
4 Robert, of Toxteth Park, near Liverpool, b. 5 Sept. 1776; m. his cousin, Hannah-Maria, dau. of Robert Andrews, Esq., of whom hereafter, he d. 19 May, 1849.

Mr. Joseph Andrews d. 29 Oct. 1749, and was s. by his son and heir,

ROBERT ANDREWS, Esq. of Little Lever and Rivington; he having s. to the Rivington estate, on the death of Mr. Wilson, as great-nephew and heir-at-law of John Andrews aforesaid; b. 30 Dec. 1741; m. 1st, Mary, dau. of Samuel Darbishire, of Bolton-le-Moors, by whom he had no issue. He m. 2ndly, Sarah, dau. of Thomas Cockshott, of Marlow, co. York, and by her (who d. 29 April, 1791) had issue,

Anna-Maria, b. 21 July, 1783; m. her cousin. Robert Fletcher, of Toxteth Park, as before mentioned, and d. 22 June, 1859, having had issue, 1 Robert-Andrews Fletcher, d. unm.: 1 Jane, 2 Sarah, 3 Lucy, who m. Woodhouse Crompton of Liverpool, and left issue, John-William Crompton, b. 13 Dec. 1834; Robert-Andrews Crompton; Samuel Crompton and Joseph Crompton, 4 Mary-Anne, and 5 Catherine

Mr. Andrews, d. 13 Aug. 1793, and was s. by his son and heir,

ROBERT ANDREWS, Esq. of Little Lever and Rivington, J.P. and D.L., b. 13 Jan. 1785; who d. unm. 4 July, 1858, and was s. by his brother the present JOHN ANDREWS, Esq. of Little Lever and Rivington.

Arms-Quarterly: 1st and 4th, gu., a saltier, or, surmounted of another, vert; in chief, a trefoil, arg. for ANDREWS; 2nd and 3rd, arg., two bends, sa.; the one in chief, engrailed, for LEVER of Darcy Lever.
Crest-A Moor's head, in profile, couped at the shoulders, ppr., in the ear a pendant, arg.
Motto-Fortiter defendit.
