Halesowen, Worcestershire

Historical Description

Halesowen, a town, a township, and a parish in Worcestershire. The town stands in a fertile valley, on the river Stour, near the Netherton Canal, and near the boundary with Staffordshire, 4½ miles E by S of Stourbridge, and 5 SSE of Dudley. It has a station on a branch to King's Norton worked by the G.W.R. and the M.R., and also on a branch of the G.W.R. to Dudley. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Birmingham. It is a seat of petty sessions, and has a police station, a bank, and an institute and library. The church dates from about the tim& of the Conquest; exhibits characters of Norman, Early English, Early Decorated, and Perpendicular styles; comprises nave, aisles, and chancel; measures 120 feet in length and 60 in width; has a tower with graceful spire; and was repaired in 1838, restored in 1875, and enlarged in 1883. It contains a Norman font, sedilia, a tomb of the 14th century, an um to the poet Shenstone, who was buried in the churchyard, an elaborate monument to Major Halliday, and several memorial windows. There are Congregational, Baptist, New Connexion and Primitive Methodist chapels, and a grammar school. A Premonstratensian priory was built in 1215 about half a mile from the town by Bishop de Rupibus; was given at the dissolution to Sir John Dudley, and has left some" small vestiges. A weekly market is held on Saturday, and fairs on Easter Monday and Tuesday, also on the-Monday nearest 10 Oct. The making of gun barrels, edg& tools, gas tubes, files, spades, nails, rivets, anchors, anvils, and horn buttons is carried on. The parish comprises the townships of Halesowen, Hasbury, Hawn, Lapal, Lutley, Uley, and part of Hill and Hunnington. Acreage, 4500; population, 9000. The Grange is the chief seat. Bellevue, Witley Lodge, and Leasowes also are here, and the last was the birthplace and residence of Shenstone. The church of St Rendm in Romsley, with a tower, built in the time of Henry VIII., is on the spot where the body of Renelm, son of Ren-ulf, King of Mercia, was found. The surface of the parish is hilly. Sandstone is quarried, lime is worked, and firebricks are made. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Worcester; net value, £520 with residence. Patron, Viscount Cobham. The rectories of Eomsley and Quinton, and the vicarages of Cradley and Oldbury are separate benefices, in the gift of the Rector of Halesowen. Hales Place. See HACRINGTON. Halestown or Halsetown, a village and a chapelry in St Ives parish, Cornwall. The village is suburban to St Ives, 1 mile from St Ives station on the G.W.R., and 4 miles NW of Hayle. The chapelry was constituted in 1846, and ifs post town is St Ives, Cornwall. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Truro; value, £170 The church was built in 1866, is in the Early Decorated English style, and consists of nave, chancel, and aisles, with porch and vestry. There are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels, and a small mission church. The village was built for the mining population, but that industry has long since died out, and half the houses are in ruins and untenanted. The church is very isolated.
