Abberton, Worcestershire

Historical Description

Abberton, a village and a parish in Worcestershire, 6 miles NNE of Pershore. Post town, Pershore. Acreage, 999; population, 95. Abberton Hall is the chief residence. There are saline springs, similar to the waters of Cheltenham. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Worcester; net value, £142. The church was rebuilt in 1881.

Church of England

St. Edburga (parish church)

The church of St. Edburga, rebuilt, with additions, in 1881-2 on the same site, at a cost of £3,000, is an edifice of stone, in the Early English style, from the designs of Mr. W. J. Hopkins, architect, of Worcester, and consists of chancel, nave, vestry, south porch and a western tower with spire 105 feet in height, containing 2 bells, provision being made for a future peal of 6: the walls are constructed externally with the materials of the old church, some of the ancient, windows being re-inserted; internally they are lined with red and coloured brick: the font, a Norman work, has been retained, and the monuments of the Sheldons replaced.: the rebuilding was carried out at the sole cost of the late William Laslett esq, of Abberton Hall, and the church reopened by the Bishop of Worcester, Nov. 15, 1882: it has 120 sittings.
