Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Steeple Ashton, a village and a parish in Wiltshire, 3½ miles from Trowbridge station on the G.W.R., with a post, money order, and telegraph office under Trowbridge. Acreage, 2864; population of the civil parish, 705; of the ecclesiastical, 1310. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. A market cross was erected in 1679. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Salisbury, with the chapelry of Semington annexed; net value, £375 with residence, in the gift of Magdalene College, Cambridge. The church is a handsome structure in the Gothic style, with an embattled tower, and contains some interesting memorials. There are Primitive Methodist and Baptist chapels.
