Potterne, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Potterne, a village and a parish in Wiltshire. The village stands 2 miles S by W of Devizes station on the G.W.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Devizes. The parish includes the tithings of Marston and Worton. Acreage, 2186; population, 1185. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. The manor formerly belonged to the Bishop of Salisbury, but now belongs to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Eastwell is the seat of the Grubbe family, and Blounts Court of the Stancombs. There is an ancient timber house of unique beauty in the village, which has been carefully restored. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Salisbury; net value, £260 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Salisbury. The church is Early English, cruciform, and good, and has a pinnacled tower and carved pulpit; the whole building was carefully restored in 1872. The vicarage of Worton and Marston is a separate benefice. There are Wesleyan chapels, a temperance hall, and a working men's institute.
