North Newnton, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Newnton, North, or Newington, a village and a parish in Wiltshire. The village stands on the river Avon, 2 miles from Woodborough station on the G.W.R., and 8½ ESE of Devizes. Post town, Pewsey. The parish includes the tithings of Hilcott, Cuttenham, and part of Bottlesford. Acreage, 1146; population of the civil parish, 332; of the ecclesiastical, 367. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The Earl of Normanton is lord of the manor. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Salisbury; net value, £290. Patron, the Earl of Pembroke. The tower of the church is ancient, and the nave was restored in 1862.
