Landford, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Landford, a village and a parish in Wilts. The village stands on a branch of the river Test, 2½ miles from the boundary with Hants, 6 SE by S of Dean station on the L. & S.W.R., and 10 SE of Salisbury. Post and money order office under Salisbury; telegraph office, Bramshaw. Acreage of parish, 1717; population, 231. The manor belonged to the Lyghs, passed to the Davenants and the Eyres, and is now held by the Nelson family. Landford Lodge was the seat of the Greatheeds, and is now the property of the Nelsons. Iron ore exists, but has not been worked. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury; value,, £180 with residence. Patron, Earl Nelson. The church was rebuilt in 1858.

St. Andrew (parish church)

The church of St. Andrew, rebuilt in 1858, at a cost of £1,500, is an edifice of brick and stone, in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, south transept, north porch and a western bell turret containing a peal of 6 tubular bells: there are 180 sittings.
