Heddington, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Heddington, a village and a parish in Wiltshire. The village stands under Roundway Hill, adjacent to the Julian Way, 3 miles S by E of Calne station on the G.W.R., with a post office under Calne; money order and telegraph office, Bromham. It is supposed by many antiquaries to occupy the site of the Roman station Verlucio. Many Roman coins, urns, and other relics have been found in the village and its neighbourhood. The parish comprises 1782 acres; population of the civil parish, 316; of the ecclesiastical, 487. An ancient camp is on Bagdon Hill. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury; value, £215 with residence. The church has a pinnacled tower. There is a Wesleyan chapel and a workmen's club.

St. Andrew (parish church)

The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, vestry, north porch and a western embattled tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the east window is stained, and there are tablets to the Revs. James Thomas Du Boulay, ob. 1836, and Henry Rogers M.A. ob. 1669: a floor stone to the Rev. Francis Rogers, ob. 1800, and a brass to George John Majendie M.A. ob. 1842: there are 180 sittings.
