Tebay, Westmorland

Historical Description

Tebay, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in Orton parish, Westmorland, 2 miles SSW of Orton, with a station on the L. & N.W.R. and N.E.R., and a head post office. Population, 1019. The Earl of Lonsdale is lord of the manor. A butter market is held every Thursday. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; gross value, £175 with residence. The church was built in 1880, in the Gothic style, and consists of chancel, nave, and circular tower with spire. There are a Primitive Methodist chapel, a public hall, a Conservative Club, and an endowed school.
