Historical Description
Skelsmergh, a township in Kendal parish, Westmorland, 2 miles NE of Kendal station on the L. & N.W.R. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Kendal. Acreage, 2093; population, 336; of the ecclesiastical parish, 842. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The ecclesiastical parish comprises the whole of the townships of Skelsmergh and Patton together with the Scalthwaiterigg portion of the township of Scalthwaiterigg-Hay-and-Hulton-i'-the Hay. In this last is situated the hamlet of Mealbank containing woollen and snuff mills. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; gross value, £195 with residence. The church was built in 1871, is in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, transept, and turret. There are corn, comb, and bobbin mills, and a Roman Catholic chapel.
