Weston, Somerset

Historical Description

Weston, a village and a parish in Somerset. The village stands 2 miles NW of Bath, with a station on the M.R., 123 miles from London. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Bath, a court-house, a police station, and a fair at Lansdown on 10 Aug. Acreage, 2523; population of the civil parish, 4933; of the ecclesiastical parish of All Saints, 2222; of St John the Evangelist, 2714. There is a parish council of fourteen members. The civil parish of Weston was in 1879 divided between the mother church of All Saints and St John the Evangelist, the latter becoming then a separate ecclesiastical parish. Lansdown Hill is in the neighbourhood. Building stone and blue lias abound, and the latter is calcined into lime. The living of All Saints is a vicarage in the diocese of Bath and Wells; net value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church was built in 1832. It is in the Later English style and was considerably enlarged and restored in 1898. The living of St John the Evangelist is also a vicarage; net value, £194 with residence. The church was erected in 1838, and enlarged in 1869; it is an edifice of stone in the Early English style. There is a Wesleyan chapel in St John's parish, and one for Lady Huntingdon's Connexion in All Saints' parish.
