Historical Description

Charlton-Mackrell, a parish in Somerset, on the river Cary and the Fosse Way, 6 miles NW from Sparkford railway station, and 8 ENE of Langport. It has a post office under Somerton; money order office, Somerton; telegraph office, Kingsdon. Acreage, 3499; population of the civil parish, 526; of the ecclesiastical, 231. It includes the hamlets of Cary-Fitzpaine and Lytes-Cary. Lytes-Cary House in the neighbourhood is a fine specimen of an old English mansion, with a chapel attached. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells; value, £298 with residence. The church has been restored. There are endowed schools.
