Surfleet, Lincolnshire
Historical Description
Surfleet, a parish in Lincolnshire, on the river Glen and on the East Lincolnshire section of the G.N.R., 4 miles N by E of Spalding. It has a station on the railway and a post office under Spalding; money order office, Pinchbeck; telegraph office, Surfleet (R.S.) Acreage, 4082; population of the civil parish, 979; of the ecclesiastical, 975. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. Cressy Hall is a chief residence. A small trade in coals and stone is carried on. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln; gross value, £112. The church is a building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles. The foundations have sunk so much in the soft soil that the spire is much out of the perpendicular and the W door considerably below ground. It contains the cross-legged effigy of a knight in armour, said to represent one of the Cressys of Cressy Hall. There are Baptist, Free Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels, and charities worth about £100 a year.
