South Ormsby, Lincolnshire

Historical Description

Ormsby, South, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire. The village stands on an acclivity of the Wolds, 5½ miles W of Alford station on the East Lincolnshire branch of the G.N.R., and, has a post office under Alford; money order and telegraph office, Tetford. The parish contains also the hamlet or quondam parish of Ketsby, and is sometimes called South Ormsby-cum-Ketsby. Acreage, 2456; population of the civil parish, 238; of the ecclesiastical, with Calceby and Driby, 394. The property of Ormsby proper belongs to the Massingberd-Mundy family, and that of Ketsby to the York family. Ormsby Hall is the property of the Massingberd-Mundy family, and stands in a well-wooded park of 120 acres. A Roman camp of 3 acres is on the brow of a steep hill, and several Roman coins have been found on and near it. A water-mill worked by the Withem Eau is at Ketsby, and a water-mill at this place is mentioned in Domesday book. The living is a rectory, united with the rectories of Ketsby and Driby and with the vicarage of Calceby, in the diocese of Lincoln; net value, £579 with residence. The church is Transition Norman, in good condition; consists of nave, aisle, chancel, and mortuary chapel, with a tower, and contain brasses of 1430 and 1495, and several neat monuments of the Massingberds. There was formerly a church at Ketsby, but it has wholly disappeared.
