Kirkby upon Bain, Lincolnshire

Historical Description

Kirkby-upon-Bain, a township and a parish in Lincolnshire. The township lies on the river Bain, 3¼ miles from Woodhall Spa station and 4¼ from Kirkstead station on the G.N.R., and 5½ S by W of Horncastle. There is a post office under Horncastle; money order and telegraph office, Wood-hall Spa. The parish contains also the township of Tumby. Acreage, 5796; population, 652. The manor of Kirkby belongs to the Earl of Fortescue, and that of Tumby to the Hawley family. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln; net value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church, a building of stone in Debased Gothic style, was rebuilt in 1802, and restored and greatly improved in 1879. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and an endowed school with £50 a year.
