Gosberton, Lincolnshire
Historical Description
Gosberton, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire. The village stands near the Risegate Eau, 2½ miles WNW of Surfleet, and 6 N by W of Spalding. It has a station 1¾ mile distant on the G.N.R. and G.E. Joint railway, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Spalding. The parish includes also the hamlets of Cheal, Rigbolt, Westhorpe, and part of Risegate. Acreage, 8335; population of the civil parish, 1825; of the ecclesiastical, 1815. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln; net yearly value, £142 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln. The church is cruciform and interesting, includes a chapel of the Blessed Sacrament on the S side of the chancel, has a tower with fine groined roof and a beautiful octagonal spire, contains sidilia, a piscina, and effigies of a knight and lady. There are Baptist, Wesleyan, and Free Methodist chapels, a public hall, erected in 1872, a school with an endowment of about £46, charities amounting to about £120, and almshouses for eight poor women. Gosberton House is a chief residence.
