East Kirkby, Lincolnshire

Historical Description

Kirkby, East, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire. The village stands near the Catchwater Drain which is navigable to Boston, 5½ miles SW by W of Spilsby station on the G.N.R., and 12 NNE of Boston, and is a pleasant place. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Spilsby. The parish comprises 2050 aeres; population, 319. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln; net value, £102 with residence. The church is an ancient building of Ancaster stone and green sandstone, chiefly in the Decorated style, consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with a tower, and contains an oak rood screen, a piscina, and a finely-carved ancient font. There are Wesleyan and Methodist Free chapels, and a free school with about £40 a year. Bishop Goodrich was a native.
