Walmsley, Lancashire

Historical Description

Walmsley, an ecclesiastical parish in Bolton-le-Moors parish, Lancashire, 1¾ mile from Bromley Cross railway station, and 3 miles N of Bolton. It was constituted in 1844, and comprises Dimple, Egerton, part of Longworth, Toppings, Dunscar, Coxgreen Bertemshaw, and Ragley Bridge. There is a post, money order, and telegraph office at Egerton, under Bolton. Population, 4028. There are extensive cotton mills and bleaching and dye works. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Bolton. The church is in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, and a western tower. There are Congregational, Wesleyan, and Unitarian chapels.
