Standish, Lancashire
Historical Description
Standish, a village, a township, and a parish in Lancashire. The village stands near the L. & N.W.R., 3½ miles NNW of Wigan, and has a station on the railway, a post, money order, and telegraph office under Wigan, and fairs on 29 June and 25 Nov. The township bears the name of Standish-with-Langtree, is governed by a district council, and comprises 3265 acres; population, 5416; of the ecclesiastical parish, 5199. The manor has belonged since soon after the Norman Conquest to the Standish family, and once had a castle. There are extensive coal mines, bleach and dye works, and the Wigan waterworks. The parish includes several townships. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £1431 with residence. The church was bunilt in 1584 and restored in 1859, is in the Late Perpendicular style, and has a fine E window, besides several other stained glass windows, and a tower with spire. There are Roman Catholic and Wesleyan chapels, and an endowed grammar school with £100 a year.
