Silverdale, Lancashire
Historical Description
Silverdale, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in Warton parish, Lancashire. The village stands on Morecambe Bay, near the Carnforth and Ulverston section of the Furness railway, 4½ miles NW of Carnforth. It is a sea-bathing resort, and has a railway station, a post, money order, and telegraph office under Carnforth, two hotels, and good lodging-houses. The parish abounds in public footpaths and beautiful walks. It is associated with the names of Mrs. Gaskell and Charlotte Bronte. The township comprises 1154 acres of land and 336 of water and foreshore; population, 589. There is a parish council of six members and a chairman. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1871. Population, 731. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £303 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Warton. The church was built in 1885-86, is in the Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, and embattled western tower. The old church is now used as a mortuary chapel. There are a Wesleyan chapel and some small charities.
